When we use strong magnets, many people will encounter this problem. When you need to use a strong magnet, the magnet is attracting to another magnet or other object. Separating strong magnets can be a difficult task, especially NdFeB strong magnets. Here, we will introduce how to separate strong magnets safely and quickly.
1. Small magnets
Powerful magnets of small size can be separated by hand, usually without any mechanical assistance. The key trick is to slide a magnet out of the stack with a lateral motion, as shown in the image below.
2. Medium size magnet
Medium size magnet, strong magnetism and difficult to separate by hand. Generally, magnet manufacturers add plastic spacers when packaging medium-sized magnets. The magnets with spacers are easy to separate.
But once the spacers are removed, it becomes difficult to separate the magnets by hand. We can use the edge of the table to help remove the top magnet from the stack of magnets as shown in the image below. Or use a professional separator.
It is necessary to handle strong magnets of this size with care. Sometimes it is easy to pinch the skin. You can consider wearing goggles, because small fragments will fly out and scratch your eyes during collision. It is recommended to wear gloves.
3. Large size magnet
Many magnet manufacturers produce powerful magnets in large sizes, which are very difficult to handle. This magnet is generally classified as a magnet separator. With a spacer between them, we can manually separate these magnets, but I don't recommend doing this without experience.
Reminder: Neodymium magnets are brittle and fragile!
In summary, there are three things to keep in mind when separating a strong magnet from a surface or another magnet. First, you must always take precautions to protect yourself and those around you, including wearing safety glasses and taking care not to pinch your fingers or hands. Second, the magnets are always easier to separate if a plastic spacer is inserted between two magnets or one magnet and the surface it attracts. Wood, plastic and even cardboard make great spacers. Third, keep in mind that it is easier for the magnet to push away than to pull away. Work sideways and try to separate the magnets before trying to pull them apart.
